Council makes York Lake appointments

Yorkton Council has made new appointments to the York Lake Regional Park Authority.

Yorkton Council has made new appointments to the York Lake Regional Park Authority.

"Yorkton City Council is required to appoint the members of the York Lake Regional Park Authority Board, which has no legal authority unless its members are appointed by Yorkton City Council," Darcy McLeod, Director, Community Development, Parks and Recreation told the regular meeting of Council Monday.

Although Regional Parks operate like non-profits they are not governed by The Non-profit Corporations Act, 1995 and do not have the same requirements as other non-profit organizations. The Authority was established as a Body Corporate through provincial

legislation and therefore only responds to The Regional Parks Act, 1979 and The Regional Park, explained McLeod.

"Although the City appoints the Board, the City has no ownership, taxing authority, fiscal or other responsibility for the Regional Park or its operations."

McLeod went on to note, "Ray Sass, Kendra Potzus and Jason Trost currently sit on the Authority Board as representatives of the Cabin Owner's Association and the Recreation Stakeholder organization's current representatives are John Anaka and Barry Signarowski. They were appointed for two years by Council in 2013 with terms ending at the conclusion of the Authority's 2015 AGM."

"Council now needs to appoint four new members to the Authority Board to replace those members whose terms are expiring.

The Cabin Owner's recommended representatives are Erin Horvath and Dale Blazeiko with the Stakeholder Recreation Organization recommended representatives being Merv Wasylenchuk and Geoff Rushowick."

Council was unanimous in its appointments.
