Yorkton Council received and filed a copy of the Yorkton Business Improvement District Development Plan for 2011 to 2013, as well as the 2011 YBID Budget at Council's regular meeting Monday.
The report identified YBID is looking to initiate several new initiatives in 2011 according to the report.
Topping the list is creating a Clean Street Team.
"YBID will be hiring people to walk our district street picking up litter. These folks will be outfitted in bright lime work vests and caps. They will be using brooms and wheeled garbage containers and remove as much litter as possible from the city sidewalks. Yorkton has a reputation as a clean community. We want to improve on that idea," detailed the report from YBID Executive Director Phil DeVos.
Work is also planned for the Old Mill Park.
"We continue to work on this project over the winter months and now into spring 2011. We are focused on creating a low maintenance park featuring native plants and shrubs. We will soon be receiving three concepts for park development with a budget. The project information will then be shared with City Council for their approval. Once the land has been fully cleared the actual work will begin. There will be some issues with the grounds as we believe they will be rather wet and work cannot begin until it is fully dry," stated DeVos' report.
The YBID is also starting the process to create a wireless Internet zone in the city's downtown.
"YBID would like to help Yorkton follow the lead of other progressive communities by making internet service available in public places throughout our district. This project will probably not move past the research stage in 2011. YBID will be approaching SaskTel to see what would be involved. It simply means that a member of our community or visitor with the proper equipment could start up a laptop in our park or other public facilities and access internet service. In doing the research we may find that with G3 service now available and other forms of internet use by travellers we may not require this, but feel it is worth a look," detailed the report.
