Courses now available on line

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training will now be more accessible with the introduction of a web-based training initiative.

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training will now be more accessible with the introduction of a web-based training initiative.

The training will be of particular interest to people who are responsible for conducting inspections and investigations related to health and safety, including members of occupational health committees, health and safety representatives, managers and supervisors.

"We are pleased to announce the launch of web-based training courses to make important occupational health and safety information easily available and accessible to anyone who needs it," Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said.

Currently two courses are available online. Saskatchewan Workplace Inspections explains how to effectively prepare for and conduct inspections to prevent work-related injury and illness. Incident Investigations in Saskatchewan Workplaces provides an introduction and practical approach to conducting investigations where there has been an injury or other incident at work.

Anyone interested in taking the courses can access them through the WorkSafe Saskatchewan website at www.worksafesask.ca. There is a $10 registration fee to take either course. Participants who successfully complete the tests at the end of the courses will receive a certificate.

"This is the first of a number of initiatives we are undertaking as a result of recent research recommendations on how to improve the Workplace Responsibility System," Morgan said. "We are exploring new and innovative ways to protect and promote the health and safety of Saskatchewan workers."

Historically, OHS training sessions have been offered in face-to-face training sessions in major centres. Web-based training will improve the accessibility to the training.

Employers in Saskatchewan have an obligation to ensure that members of occupational health committees and health and safety representatives receive training on their duties and functions. The Workplace Responsibility System provides a co-operative structure through which employers and workers can actively participate in identifying and controlling workplace hazards.
