Attempted murder sentencing February 21
A 47-year-old Invermay man who pleaded guilty to attempted murder at Yorkton Provincial court will be sentenced Thursday.
On July 27, 2010, police responded to a call from a farm in the Regional Municpality of Invermay where they found a 47-year-old man who had suffered serious injuries from a gunshot wound.
RCMP arrested the victim's neighbour, Rodney Hanishweski the following day near Saskatoon. Hanishewski finally pleaded guilty December 6, 2012. A sentencing hearing was set for February 21, 2013.
Attempted murder with a firearm carries a mandatory minimum penalty of four years and a maximum of life in prison.
Murder trial starts March 11
The first-degree murder trial of an Usherville man for killing Gwenda Gregory in 2009 will get underway in less than three weeks at Court of Queen's Bench in Yorkton.
In March 2009, 50-year-old Gregory was found dead in her Usherville home. RCMP classified the death as a homicide, but the case went unsolved for three years until police caught a break in the spring of 2012.
They arrested 46-year-old Jaycee Mildenberger on June 8, 2012.
The preliminary hearing is scheduled for four days, March 11 -14.
Thief sentenced to seven months
A Yorkton man was sentenced to seven months in prison on two charges of theft under $5,000 and one count of stealing a motor vehicle.
In sentencing Lawrence Gordon to incarceration of three months for theft of groceries at Extra Foods in Saskatoon, three months for theft of goods from Home Hardware in Yorkton and one month for the theft of a truck, Judge Ross Green cited the man's criminal record as a factor.
The crimes occurred around the Christmas holidays.
In his own defence, Gordon said he had been on the right track for some time before getting caught up in a "spiral" of alcohol and drug abuse that led him to carrying out the offences.
He will serve the three sentences consecutively.
