Bob Purton advises Mike Nelson on the art of glide waxing cross country skies.

The Yorkton Cross Country Ski Club offers both classic and skate ski packages for rent to it’s members ranging from youth to adult sizes. “Our goal is to provide a good experience on quality ski equipment to families trying cross country skiing in Yorkton” explains Bob Purton, “to have these skis preped and ready to go, our new equipment needs to have glide wax applied along with grip wax, which takes hours but it’s worth it. We know that the skies are waxed for the days conditions, which will give skiers a better experience then simply grabbing just any old pair of skies and heading out on the snow. Boots that fit, skies waxed and poles that are fitted for your size and groomed ski trails, all add up to some good family fun! The only thing we can’t predict is how well you will do on the skies! But getting the hang of xc skiing just simply takes practice practice practice!”

“The Yorkton Club wanted to provide ski rentals because I have always had ski friends ask if the club had any used skies that people could borrow or if there were anyone renting out skies.” Stupak explains  “The club had several pairs of old skies accumulating but no boots and most of these old skies were much heavier the new skies of today! Once our club had an agreement with the City of Yorkton for the use of the club house and we were able to build a storage garage on the Deer Park grounds the club decided to get into providing ski rentals to the public and to it’s members. We purchased several sets last year and this year we added several pairs of youth skies. We really want to have families give their kids a chance to try skiing before making a purchase and thats why we focused in on the smaller sizes. We also have skate skies for those that want to give a faster style of skiing a go. The club wants to encourage those that have older equipment to give this new lighter more responsive ski equipment a try.  There is nothing like having a good ski day when the glide is perfect and the kilometres just slide by and all starts with good equipment prepared just right! And thats what we want everyone to enjoy when they rent from us.”

The Yorkton Ski club provides rentals for $20.00 per week or $10.00 for 2 hours on Sunday afternoons. Membership is mandatory to all that rent from us which is $30.00 per person or $70.00 for a family. The Deer Park Club house is open for rental’s Sundays from 1-4

The Yorkton Ski Club also offers basic ski instruction to those that may need assistance getting started xc skiing.

Club President Anne Stupak states “that we have great trails to learn on, the terrain is mainly flat on loop 1 on the west side of the club house and progressively gets more rolling in loops 2 &3. Each loop comes back to the club house, each loop being about 1 1/2 - 2 kms long. We have just under 7 km in total. Loop 1 is double tracked for classic style skiing and loops 2&3 are tracked for both classic and skate ski and thanks to Ken Gedak our head groomer and the recent snow fall, we have some of the best trails around our area.”

Trails at Deer Park are free to use to the public but the club does encourage membership to help maintain the trails and the equipment. The club hosts coffee and hot chocolate in the club house on Sundays between 1-4 and everyone is welcome to stop in for a warm up and a visit.
