Day to mark JumpStart program

Canadian Tire JumpStart Day will be recognized in Yorkton May 31, following a unanimous decision by Yorkton Council Monday.

"Launched in 2005 by the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families, Canadian Tire JumpStart is a charitable program to help kids in financial need participate in organized sports and recreation such as dance, martial arts and swimming, as well as team sports such as basketball, hockey and soccer. Funding is available for qualified applicants to offset registration fees, equipment and transportation costs. It helps tighten the financial gap by providing funding of up to $600 per child in a fiscal year," detailed material circulated to Council.

In Yorkton, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yorkton and Area, City of Yorkton, and Boys and Girls Club of Yorkton form the local chapter, noted presenter Irma Van De Bon-Nicol, Chairperson Yorkton Canadian Tire JumpStart Chapter.

"Research has proven that participation in sports and recreation increases a child's chance of success in life through a healthier lifestyle, increased self-esteem and confidence, the opportunity to learn important leadership skills, and improved school performance and future education expectations," stated the material.

"Since its inception, CTJS has provided more $180,000 for more than 1170 financially disadvantaged children," said Van De Bon-Nicol.

Local activities associated with the week include a BBQ at Yorkton Canadian Tire on May 29, 30, and 31st to raise money for the local Yorkton and area Canadian Tire JumpStart Chapter.

This weekend in May will not only raise funds for the program, but will raise awareness within the community that this program is available to those families who need it most.
