A newly formed group in Springside has recently applied to incorporate as a non profit organization in order to create it's own entity. Springside Daycare Inc. has taken the first step to open a daycare in the town of close to 600 people and is now waiting confirmation of their application to start the long road ahead to create this much needed service.

"The results of a survey taken this spring confirm what so many parents already know.Springside needs more childcare." indicates Tracey Werner, Secretary of the newly formed organization. "With only a handful of mom's providing childcare for approximately 15 children, and two possibly slated to close in the near future due to relocation, concerns have been raised by parents needing more spots for childcare in this community."

"Many families are forced to take their children to Yorkton due to the lack of available childcare in our community", says Vice Chairperson Janine Graves. "The waiting list in Yorkton is getting longer and longer and unfortunately, many parents are struggling with even getting on the waiting list in the city," Graves adds. "I know of several women who are unable to return back to work after having their babies due to their inability to find daycare available."

With communication from the Early Learning Branch of the Ministry of Education, Graves and the other members of the daycare board are determined to complete a needs assessment to present to the government that will hopefully be approved and open the door for funding to assist with opening a licensed facility. Until then, they are continuing look for a suitable location within the town and continuing to come up with fundraising ideas to come up with funds to start the centre.

One of their first fundraisers will be an afternoon of entertainment provided by musicians Freddie and Sheila Pelletier of Birch Hills. Freddie is an extraordinary guitar instrumentalist who emulates the works of great American country guitarists like Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, and others. He also loves to pick bluegrass tunes, traditional fiddle tunes and 50's and 60's rock instrumentals on guitar. Sheila is an experienced rhythm guitarist with a crystal clear voice and sings country classics, bluegrass, gospel and a handful of 'yodeling' western tunes. This duo is sure to keep you entertained on Sunday, September 28th. The show starts at 2:00 pm in the Springside Centennial Town Hall and will include coffee/dainties during intermission and door prizes donated by various businesses. With ticket prices at a modest $25.00 each, this event is sure to sell out quickly. Tickets can be purchased from the Springside Town Office, Cornerstone Credit Union Springside Branch, Hotel California or by contacting Janine Graves at 641-4318 or Tracey Werner at 792-2143. Anyone wishing to donate to the Springside Daycare can send their tax deductible donation payable to the Springside Daycare c/o Town of Springside and mailing it to Springside Daycare, Box 493, Springside, SK S0A 3V0.
