The departure of one of Yorkton's three anesthetists this week could have a "slight" impact on local surgery volumes in the near future, reports the Sunrise Health Region.

Anesthetist Dr. Michel Salib is leaving his practice on December 1 after 23 years in Yorkton.

"We have been receiving applications for the anesthetist position and have had several expressions of interest," said Sunrise director of communications Sharon Tropin last Tuesday, "including someone who just completed a site visit last week that looks quite promising."

Depending on the chosen candidate's country of origin, the position could be vacant for "weeks or months" while the immigration and accreditation processes unfold. But several applications have come from Canada, said Tropin, which would mean a much shorter delay.

Yorkton's current surgical wait list is "not very long," Tropin said.

"Until a third anesthetist is hired, the surgical volumes may be slightly down for all surgeries except for ophthalmology, but the impact over the short term is manageable."
