The Yorkton West Drainage City Wide Stormwater Model Report was presented to the regular meeting of Council Monday.
The Model created through work by Engineering Services would come with a major price tag if fully implemented.
"A blueprint is provided that allows the city to budget storm water improvements on the west side of the city over twelve years. The future cost of this work is estimated at $13 million (2012 dollars). This figure includes engineering, contingency and construction costs but not GST or PST," detailed a Report circulated to Council Monday.
"AE also prepared a Technical Memorandum for Public Works that reviewed overland flow opportunities along Broadway Street as part of the Broadway Street Infrastructure Improvements project."
The suggested work includes several smaller projects.
"This work suggests installing additional catch basins on Laurier and Agricultural to improve drainage by McDonalds and the Laundromat. This will need to be further investigated by Engineering Services and Public Works. Another area that will need to be investigated is Gladstone Avenue South from Broadway Street West to the round-a-bout. Some portions of this drainage pipe need to be replaced. Engineering Services and Public Works will also review this drainage infrastructure. A third project is located within the Yellowhead Commercial subdivision. AE suggested upsizing the storm pipe on Palliser Way and create a storm pond within the municipal reserve located to the west of Wal-Mart," detailed the Report.
Gord Shaw, Director of Planning & Engineering with the City noted the $13 million ($2012) represents a significant investment in drainage works. The city has invested $7 million to date on this system. The additional work outlined in will ensure better drainage on the west side of the city.
Given the demands on capital improvements in the city over the next ten years, Engineering Services recommends the city look at implementing these projects over twenty years or more to ensure other infrastructure is maintained.
