As travellers prepare to hit the road for the first long weekend of the summer, CAA Saskatchewan offers motorists tips on how to drive safely, save money and help the environment.
Traditionally, the May long weekend brings increased traffic, including cyclists and pedestrians, as well as more road construction and detours, all of which can increase the chance of traffic collisions. It also often brings higher gas prices.
"Many people don't realize that being a safe driver also makes you a fuel-efficient driver," said Lisa Wilson-Sturm, Director of Communications with CAA Saskatchewan. "Slowing down, driving less aggressively and ensuring your vehicle is in top condition are just some things that will improve your safety on the road and help to reduce your vehicle's fuel consumption."
To help stay safe and save money, follow these tips:
Ensure your vehicle is in top shape with properly inflated tires. A poorly maintained vehicle can use up to 50 per cent more fuel. Under-inflated tires also reduce fuel efficiency.
Plan your route carefully to avoid driving unnecessary kilometres.
Buckle up and ensure children are properly secured in their safety seats.
Don't speed. It's dangerous, and driving above 90 km/hour decreases your fuel efficiency exponentially.
Slow to 60 km/h in construction zones & when passing emergency vehicles or tow trucks assisting motorists.
Don't drink and drive.
Don't drive aggressively. Jackrabbit starts and hard braking can increase fuel consumption up to 40 per cent.
Eliminate driver distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, adjusting radio dials and smoking.
Don't drive if you're overtired. Stop regularly for breaks.
Use Cruise Control and save fuel by keeping your speed constant.
Reduce idling. You'll save money and help the environment.
