The Health Foundation's Scholarship Fund began in 2002 when the foundation and TD undertook to mutually fund an education program for five years.
After five years the awards were reviewed and both the TD and The Health Foundation found the education program to be very effective and decided to continue the program.
The Health Foundation and TD Bank Financial Group recently announced the recipients of the spring Education Awards for 2011. Applications are considered twice each year and awards are given each spring and fall. This spring 16 awards are being made for a total of $10,907.60
The Health Foundation's Scholarship Fund awards approximately $22,000 a year to help further the training and education of health care staff in east central Saskatchewan. The TD Bank Financial Group contributes $12,000 annually to fund 50% of the awards. The education awards program is very well received by Sunrise Health Region staff.
We are in the second year of a new three-year commitment TD Bank Financial Group has made to this program. This agreement will take us to 11 consecutive years TD has partnered with The Health Foundation and made a very significant investment in our local healthcare system through this education program.
"TD Bank Financial Group is committed to investing in the future of this area by helping to ensure that nurses and other practicing caregivers have access to funds to upgrade their skills and further their education." said Jonas Haywood, TD Canada Trust Area Manager for east central Saskatchewan.
"This program has had tremendous success since it started," said Mr. Haywood. "We have successfully assisted our nurses and therapists to enhance their education and improve their skills. This program has helped improve the quality of healthcare available in our local medical facilities."
The Health Foundation Education Committee and TD Bank Financial Group presented a total of 16 awards.
The recipients of TD Bank Financial Group's scholarship awards are:
Brandon Eskra, an EMT in Langenburg, taking paramedic training
Carol Stringfellow, a nurse with Homecare, to attend a Palliative Care conference
Mary-Jean Vogel, is with the finance department in Kamsack, Health Information Management Diploma. Mary-Jean Vogel is not able to attend today and will receive her award at a later date.
The recipients of The Health Foundation's scholarship awards were:
Brenda Brooks, with Sunrise Human Resources in Yorkton,, who is taking the Occupational Health and Safety practitioner course.
Pat Kuspira, with Human Resources, taking her Labour Relations degree
Cheryl Peterson, also with human resources and taking her Human Resources certificate
Janice Flaman, an RN who is taking her post RN Bachelor of Nursing
Not able to join us today but also receiving an award:
Loretta Erhardt, an OBS nurse who is taking her Bachelor of Nursing
Denise Kominetsky, a nurse on the medicine ward of the regional health centre
Sheri Dawn MacGillivray, with Kamsack community Services, taking a Management and Leadership program

Moira Stoll, a physiotherapist with St. Peters Hospital in Melville
Lindsay Werle, who is with Public Health in Yorkton
Marie Turcotte, a nurse with Hemodialysis
Michelle Smith, a physiotherapist with primary health care
Not able to join us today but receiving awards to attend workshops and conferences are:
Sandra Murray, a nurse with Public Health;
Jennifer Long, a therapist with Cornerstone therapies.
Since the program started in 2002, there have been 216 awards totaling $199,919.60. The Health Foundation normally grants up to $22,000 in educational awards, but if some awards are unused those funds are carried forward and made available in the next round of applications.
The next deadline for applications by healthcare staff is November 19, 2011. Posters and application forms will be circulated to all Sunrise Health Region facilities and departments in the spring.
