A 19-year-old Yorkton man has been charged with break and enter and mischief over $5,000 for allegedly vandalizing the interior of St. Mary's Elementary School.
On the early morning of October 2, police say Kayden Sparvier gained access to the school by breaking a window.
Inside, he caused damage to items in a janitorial closet, destroyed two religious statues, smashed trophy cases and busted some awards, threw books around the library and wrecked some computers in a computer room.
He fled the scene, but RCMP caught up with him nearby.
Police are currently estimating the damage at approximately $10,000, but Darrell Zaba, Christ the Teacher director of education thinks it will probably be more once assessment by the school division's insurer is completed.
The money is not the worst of it though, Zaba said. The two statues, one of Mary and the other the sacred heart of Jesus, are irreplaceable.
"That's probably the most disappointing part," he said "You can replace computers, but you will never be able to replace those statues. I mean, we will, but it's not the same."
Zaba said Sparvier has no prior connection to St. Mary's or Christ the Teacher Catholic Schools.
The RCMP said alcohol was a factor in the crime.
Sparvier made his first appearance in Yorkton court on October 2 where he pleaded guilty and was released on bail. He is scheduled for sentencing November 13.
