Event gets noise bylaw exemption

The Parkland Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society is hosting a Relay for Life event Friday, June 24.

The Parkland Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society is hosting a Relay for Life event Friday, June 24.

"Relay for Life is a 12 hour walk to celebrate those who have survived cancer, remember those who haven't and to fight back by raising funds for cancer research, support of cancer patients and cancer prevention education," explained a letter to Council from Janet Sharpe, Manager, Parkland Unit of the CCS. " The actual relay involves at least one participant from each team being on the 'track' as we walk through the night to symbolize that cancer never sleeps and into the morning as daylight overtakes the dark."

The event will run from 6 p.m. through until 7 a.m. Saturday.

The event is planned to be held outside, either at the Gloria Hayden Centre, or an alternate site in the city, and as a result the Cancer Society made a request to the regular meeting of Council for an exemption to the Noise Bylaw, since during the night a number of special ceremonies as well as ongoing activities and music to keep the participants inspired as they walk.

Council approved an exemption to the bylaw for the event wherever it is finally hosted in the city.
