Fall safety tips offered

There are many changes that take place as fall approaches. The leaves fade from green to yellow, the warm morning air becomes brisk and cool, and children are out of the house and back in school.

There are many changes that take place as fall approaches. The leaves fade from green to yellow, the warm morning air becomes brisk and cool, and children are out of the house and back in school. Now is the time to show them what they can do if an accident happens and St. John Ambulance is here to help.

If an accident does happen ALWAYS:

1. Keep calm.

2. Get to a safe area and assess the situation.

3. Find help or get someone to find help for you.

For a cut or scrape:

1. Call for help.

2. Apply pressure to the wound by covering it with your hand or having someone else cover it for you.

3. Lie down and keep calm while waiting for help to arrive.

4. If help is far away, take fabric and tie it around the wound so that it applies pressure but does not cut off circulation.

Knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference. If you would like to help your child be prepared, enroll them in a St. John Ambulance Home Alone or Babysitting course. They will learn first aid skills and learn principles of prevention. Also available is the We Can Help program which consists of an informative colouring book that walks children through first aid scenarios.

If you would like a copy of this colouring book for your child, contact any St. John Ambulance Training Centre and receive one for only a dollar.

St. John Ambulance is a volunteer based non-profit charity dedicated to improving the health and safety of Canadians. St. John First Aid courses help support community projects throughout Saskatchewan. See what St. John can do for you - call 1-888-273-0003 or visit us at www.sja.ca/Saskatchewan.
