The postcard with the caption "A Smile From Menlo, Iowa" was sent to Mrs. Henry Dillennith of Yorkton. Circa 1912. Hats have been worn since time immemorial for various reasons. Protection from the elements, injury, status of authority, uniforms, part of dressing-up attire, and then as an art form. During the Edwardian Period (the reign of King Edward VII from 1901-1910) hats became excessively decorative and flamboyant. Women wore tight corsets and long skirts. More practical fashions would start during World War l, when women joined the labour force in greater numbers than before, and practical clothing proved necessary.
