The Yorkton Film Festival has been recognized for its contributions to the arts.

At the Saskatchewan Arts Board (SAB) Gala October 18, the provincial organization present YFF co-chair Richard Gustin with the Leadership – Organization award.

“YFF is a Saskatchewan leader in providing filmmakers with a relaxed atmosphere, where they can make valued connections with broadcasters, distributors and film organizations,” the board said. “This includes strong partnerships with The National Film Board, Telefilm Canada, Raven Banner Media, Superchannel, Bell Media, Discovery Channel and more.

“The organization works towards strengthening the arts and culture community by helping content creators achieve success.”

Getting ready to celebrate 70 years in 2017, the honour comes at an opportune time.

“I was pretty excited,” said Randy Goulden, YFF executive director. “People think of us as a festival, but we do so much more in terms of leadership.”

Both Goulden and SAB cited the new mentorship program, in partnership with RBC, that will “help connect emerging filmmakers with established industry members to help push their cultural careers to the next level.”

Goulden added it is an honour just to be considered in the same league as Regina’s Globe Theatre and the Station Arts Centre in Rosthern, the other two 2016 nominees for the leadership award.

The recognition also comes with a cash prize of $6,000. Goulden said that would be used to fund leadership functions of the festival such as the annual student day for local high schools.
