The final sentencing in a 2016 home invasion happened in Yorkton Provincial Court on Friday, January 5. Taylor Peequaquat was the last of the five individuals in the case to be sentenced.
Peequaquat plead guilty to two lesser charges of assault causing bodily harm, breaking and entering, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of a face mask for the purpose of breaking into a place.
Peequaquat, along with co-accused Darian Kamieniecki, Blaine Quewezance and two youth, broke into the home of Nathan Ortynsky searching for cash and drugs, ordered to do so by an upper ranking member of the Native Syndicate.
Two of the accused fled the scene in a vehicle which drove into a tree, while three fled on foot.
Peequaquat initially denied involvement in the case but was placed there by DNA evidence on a wooden dowel wrapped in electrical tape found at the scene of the crime. The five accused were also found to be connected on social media.
As a mitigating factor, the crime was not Peequaquat’s idea, as he was ordered to go along with the others in the break and enter.
Judge Ross Green accepted the joint submission for sentencing, which saw Peequaquat receive a total of five years and four months, as well as a lifetime weapons prohibition. With credit for 11 months time served, Peequaquat will serve an additional four years in prison.
Peequaquat is the last of the accused to be sentenced. Kamieniecki received five years of prison time in the same case, and Quewezance received
