A fire in a Sacred Heart High School workshop Friday forced the school to briefly evacuate students and staff.

Chad Holinaty, Christ the Teacher Catholic Schools superintendent of education, said sparks from a welding torch started a small fire in the Industrial Arts room. An instructor immediately suppressed the fire, but as a precaution the school was evacuated and Yorkton Fire Protective Services was called.

After a thorough inspection by the fire department, students and teachers returned to their classrooms.

Holinaty said the entire incident lasted less than an hour.

Sacred Heart Vice Principal Melissa Moen said everything went very smoothly.

“Thank you to all students and staff for your quick exit from the school,” she wrote in an email advising parents of the incident. “A special thank you to the Yorkton Fire Department for ensuring our safety.”
