After losing everything and being dislocated by the fire that claimed the Yorkton Manor Apartments December 2, Mark Hendrie got a most unwelcome Christmas present from Sasktel.

On his December bill, there were three charges totaling $344.95 for equipment not returned to the company.

Hendrie said he was not the only former resident to which this happened. When he called the company to explain, he said he was told it was a matter between him and his insurance company.

The problem is, he didn’t have insurance.

“I was only there for a couple of weeks and I hadn’t gotten around to it,” he said. “Basically [Sasktel] told me I was out of luck.”

The phone company issued the following statement:

“SaskTel is extremely empathetic with the residents who have lost everything. Unfortunately, these customers are responsible for the charges for SaskTel equipment lost. We encourage them to submit a claim to their insurance company. There are many difficult situations unfortunately, however, we do aim to treat all our customers equitably in these matters. If a customer does not have insurance, they are still responsible for the equipment but SaskTel would be prepared to enter into payment arrangements with these customers.”
