Find your loosest pants, grab a bigger belt and get ready to eat as much barbecue as you can. The first Rhythm and Ribs event is bringing three days of music and food to the Gallagher Centre grounds.
Five international championship barbecue teams will be at the event, and Ross Fisher, executive director of the Health Foundation, says they’re going to be bringing the kind of barbecue that Yorkton hasn’t seen before. The weekend will also feature music from beginning – 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28 – to end on Sunday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m.
Local barbecue experts will not be left out, as there will be a competition for the best local barbecue.
The drinks will also feature craft beer from Back 40 Brewery.
Fisher says that the credit for the event has to go to the group putting it together.
“This is all possible because we have had a really tremendous group of people working on the committee, and we have had some great sponsorship... Big events like this don’t take place without a lot of people working on it.”
They also are still looking for volunteers to help out over the weekend. Fisher directs people to the website www.rhythmandribsyorkton.ca with their name, number and shirt size, as all volunteers get a free shirt.
“We’ve broken things down into three hour shifts so people don’t have to spend all of their time volunteering. They can spend a little time helping us out and then they can go sample the barbecue and perhaps have a cold drink.”
This year, money raised from the Rhythm and Ribs event will go to buying equipment for the maternity ward at the Yorkton Regional Hospital.
They expect to see 15,000 people attend the event over the three days.
“It’s basically going to be one big barbecue summer party, that will go for three days and we expect that everybody is going to have a really fun time.”
