It is a German greeting meaning Happy Easter. Easter is a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ who had died following crucifixion. There are a number of legends surrounding this event. Since olden times, eggs were considered pious gifts because they were a symbol of resurrection. One legend has it that someone dyed Easter eggs that children found later in the woods and assumed they were left by a rabbit that had just sprinted by. German Lutherans, sometimes depicted the Easter bunny with clothes as seen in this image. In legend, the rabbit carried colored eggs in his wagon or basket. Sometimes there were toys. The custom was first mentioned in a 1682 legend, about a German tradition of an Easter hare bringing Easter eggs for the children.
