Yorkton took a step forward last week on affordable housing with the completion of Fromm Manor comprising 11 new low income rental units for single people.
“This project is possible because of continued partnerships between governments, and the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors,” said Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit on behalf of the Province. “Our Government continues to make housing projects like this a priority because we know that safe, quality housing for families and individuals across the province will keep Saskatchewan strong, now and in the years ahead.”
Located on Tupper Avenue, the 325-square-foot, bachelor-style apartments are close to support services such as the laundromat, drug stores, medical treatment, grocery stores, and agencies that provide support for low-income people.
The joint federal-provincial-municipal project was completed at a cost of $1.6 million, 1.1 million of which came from Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing (2011-2014) Agreement. The Yorkton Housing Corporation kicked in the remaining $479,000.
“The Yorkton Housing Corporation provides adequate, suitable and affordable housing for low income adults in our community, and this will add 11 badly needed, new and affordable rental units for individuals with complex needs,” said Bob Maloney, Yorkton mayor. “This project is the first of its kind in Yorkton, and we are grateful for the partnership with both the federal and provincial levels of governments in funding this project.”
The building pays tribute to former Yorkton mayor Brian Fromm (1985-1988). Following his stint as mayor, Fromm served on City Council from 1989 until his untimely death in 2002 at the age of 46.
Ralph Goodale, on behalf of the federal government, hinted these units may just be the beginning.
“I want to congratulate everyone involved in Fromm Manor along with the funding partners CMHC and the Province of Saskatchewan, that have been so visionary and supportive in getting this development underway,” he said. “In the coming weeks and months, we look forward to working with Canadians, housing stakeholders and our partners in provinces, territories and municipalities as we restore a constructive role for the federal government in supporting affordable housing.”
