Frustration with the speed of a case spilled out in Yorkton Provincial Court, as Blain Gaudet waits for trial dates to be set.
Gaudet currently faces over 40 charges in relation to a string of robberies in September. Gaudet is currently looking for new council as legal aid lawyer Carson Demmans out of Regina cannot handle the case fast enough for him. The accused argued that the crown did not have enough evidence against him, and described the handling of the case so far as a “personal vendetta” against him.
“I have been to court ridiculous amounts of times on this,” Gaudet said.
Judge Donna Taylor noted that she understood Gaudet’s mounting frustration at the continued delays in his case.
While efforts were made to reserve trial dates in May of 2018, Gaudet objected to the long delay, arguing for a much earlier trial date.
Five days were requested for the trial from the crown given the number of charges in the case.
Gaudet’s co-accused, Janelle Umpherville, was sentenced to 19 months for her role, while a second co-accused, Jason Campbell, will next appear in court January 5.
