Girl Guide bottles stolen overnight

Yorkton Girl Guide leader Carrie Morrison awoke Monday morning to find thieves had entered her fenced-in backyard during the night and made off with bags full of bottles collected by Girl Guides in the city Sunday.

Yorkton Girl Guide leader Carrie Morrison awoke Monday morning to find thieves had entered her fenced-in backyard during the night and made off with bags full of bottles collected by Girl Guides in the city Sunday.

Morrison explained a group of Guides are "planning a trip to the Caribbean," to visit several countries in July 2014.

"They've been working hard and fundraising," she said.

That fundraising effort included Sunday's bottle drive.

"They came back to my place and sorted them, cleaned them and bagged them," said Morrison.

The organization had made arrangements to deliver the bottles to SARCAN Tuesday morning. Morrison said with such large amounts the centre needs to book in an arrival time.

"They have to know when they're coming," she said.

There were too many bottles for the garage, but they felt the rest were safe in their fenced yard.

"They must have come and took truckloads from the girl's hard work," she said. "It's pretty evil."

Morrison said their last bottle drive raised $1,200.

"I figure we had just as much this time," she said, adding she feels $400 to $600 in bottles was stolen. "It had to take two or three truckloads. Someone must have known what was going on."

Morrison said they have filed a police report, and have informed SARCAN depots both in Yorkton and Melville of the theft.

In the shadow of the theft Morrison said the Rolling Thunders Cruisers, a local car group has pledged them $100 to offset the loss and are calling on members and others to bring bottles to a gathering at A&W in the city this Wednesday (tonight).

Anyone with information on the theft can contact the RCMP, and anyone wishing to help the 28 girls going on the 2014 trip can contact the local Girl Guides.
