Fort Livingstone School has received a reprieve from potential closure.

The Good Spirit School Division Board of Education had placed the Pelly K-12 school on review at its regular meeting in October. A review examines a school’s future viability based on enrolment figures, location, transportation considerations, grade configuration, staffing, operational costs, facility standards, program offerings, and extra-curricular activities

At its December meeting, the board accepted the recommendation of Fort Livingstone’s school community council (SCC) to discontinue Grades 9 through 12 effective as of  the 2015-2106 school year. The motion passed by the board also included a three-year moratorium on future reviews of the K-8 classes.

“As a board, we were impressed with the amount of time and effort these parents have put into their discussions and we are extremely happy we were able to reach what looks to be the best decision for all involved,” said Lois Smandych board chair.

Starting next September Pelly high school students will be bussed to the K-12 facility in nearby Norquay.
