Good Spirit School Division (GSSD) is celebrating Education Week this week by honouring student achievement.
Each school in the division (with the exception of Langenburg High School and Columbia School in Yorkton) will present a Student of Distinction Award to a student who exemplifies the GSSD values of belonging, respect responsibility learning and nurturing.
Specific attention is given to the student's community involvement, academic achievement and contribution to community and school spirit.
The prestigious award is not necessarily based on specific achievements such as high grades or superior athletic performance, but rather overall impact a student has.
"A student of distinction is not necessarily one that achieves in academic or extra-curricular activities, but one which regards others with respect and true caring," it states in the nomination criteria.
School board chair Ray Sass kicked off the week of celebrations at Dr. Brass School Monday morning by presentation that school's Student of Distinction to Kate Nelson.
In his preamble to the presentation, Sass focused on how Nelson demonstrates leadership in everything she does.
This year's theme for Education week is "Learning Success Today Leading Success tomorrow."
"Education plays an important role in the growth and success of Saskatchewan and its students, our future leaders," said Russ Marchuk, minister of education. "The theme is a good reminder that success can look different for each student, but it is important that everyone strive for improvement and a positive future."
The full slate of Student of Distinction Award winners will be published in the October 24 edition of Yorkton This Week.
