A Yorkton Regional High School student arrested June 20 for an incident involving a replica firearm at Yorkton Regional High School has been released from custody.
The boy, who cannot be named pursuant to a publication ban, appeared in Regina Provincial Court June 22 on charges of possession of a weapon (an Airsoft gun) dangerous to the public peace, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of marijuana.
He also faced two counts of failure to comply as he was already on release conditions for an alleged assault in the spring.
His new release conditions include not possessing or using alcohol or non-prescription drugs and not possessing weapons.
The incident sent the school into lockdown at approximately 1:45 in the afternoon after police received a complaint about a student with a gun. Two nearby elementary schools, Dr. Brass and MC Knoll were placed in a “hold and secure” posture. By 2:30, those protocols were lifted with the youth in custody.
Another teen was injured during the incident and treated at hospital, but the RCMP stressed the undisclosed injuries were not inflicted by the accused.
The boy’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 11 at Yorkton.
His status at the school is yet to be determined. Quintin Robertson, Good Spirit School Division director of education, said a discipline committee, comprising himself and various other division and YRHS officials, will be convened to investigate.
