Gym to reopen

The Board of Education of the Good Spirit School Division held a special meeting on October 20, 2014 to review tenders for the building of the new school in Langenburg.

The Board of Education of the Good Spirit School Division held a special meeting on October 20, 2014 to review tenders for the building of the new school in Langenburg. The board approved the tender as supplied by TL Penner from Virden, Manitoba for the new school construction.

"I'm excited to embark on this new adventure," states Teresa Korol, Facilities Manager. She goes on to say, "This is something l've dreamed of for a long time. The community of Langenburg will have a beautiful new building which will serve the students and community for many years to come."

A start-up meeting will occur in the near future and the project is anticipated to be completed within the next twenty-four months for school opening fall of 2016.

At the same meeting, the Board of Education reviewed information presented that would see the current Langenburg High School gymnasium reopen for full use. The gym was one of the areas sealed earlier this school year due to air quality concerns. Yorkton Plumbing and Heating will be working with the GSSD Maintenance Department to have the gymnasium reopen within the next few weeks. This will include a new heating and ventilation system and sealing off the gym from the contaminated crawl space.

"For us, the recovery of the gym is a big step in returning the school experience for our students back to a more normal state. It is a great boost for both student and staff morale," states Mick Parmar, Principal of Langenburg High School. "The reopening of the gymnasium will allow us to once again continue with traditional events such as awards night, Christmas dinner and graduation. We have truly appreciated the support of the community, staff, students and GSSD board of education as we worked through this."

"It's a very exciting time for both the school and community," acknowledged Bryan Cottenie, Board Chair. "This is a unique experience for us to be able to approve monies to be spent in both the reopening of the current gymnasium as well as the naming of a general contractor for the new Langenburg school project. Both announcements are inspiring to know that our mission as a board is firmly in place when we work towards 'Building Strong Foundations to Create Bright Futures'."
