Habitat for Humanity is embarking on its seventh build in Yorkton, this time through a unique partnership with the Ministry of Justice.
“We are pleased to announce that Habitat for Humanity Yorkton will be soon be beginning construction of our 7th Habitat home in Yorkton,” Sylvia Henheffer, Co-Chair of Habitat for Humanity Yorkton told the regular meeting of Yorkton Council Monday.
“This year’s build will be in partnership with The Ministry of Justice with whom we have entered into a memorandum of agreement for the majority of the construction to be completed by inmates of the Whitespruce correctional facility. These participants will receive credit for their work experience under an SIIT program.”
Henheffer said the build certainly fits with the goals of her group.
“At Habitat our mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners to build affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to break the cycle of poverty,” she said.
And the project is good for the city too.
“We believe this year’s project is a win/win for the City of Yorkton, for our project partners but especially for this year’s Habitat family who will be purchasing this home,” said Henheffer.
Habitat families pay for their homes through 500 hours or more of sweat equity and through payments on an interest free mortgage.
