Sheila Hryniuk’s recent visit to her alma mater resulted in a fresh piece of hardware for her trophy case.

Hryniuk, Executive Director with Parkland Valley Sport, Culture, and Recreation District, received the Distinguished Alumni award from the University of Regina (U of R) in mid-April.

“It felt really good,” she said. “Really humbling.”

Hryniuk studied kinesiology at U of R, graduating in 1997. She’s dedicated herself to promoting healthy living, which caught the eye of Saskatchewan In Motion (SIM).

SIM nominated Hryniuk for the award. It is the first time the group has nominated an individual for such a honour.

“Sheila really stood out in making a contribution to her community,” said Cathie Kryzanowski, Executive Director with SIM. “[She] has been a strong champion for active forms of transportation.”

Hryniuk delivered a keynote address for a U of R graduating class. She discussed her career and the importance of physical activity, highlighting how technology makes sedentary lifestyles more attractive.

“The challenge ahead is how we can make movement valued,” she said.

Hryniuk will promote her message of physical recreation at an upcoming conference in Regina on May 8-10.
