Heart Month set in city

Heart Month was officially declared for February by Yorkton Council at its regular meeting Monday.

Heart Month was officially declared for February by Yorkton Council at its regular meeting Monday.

In making the request of Council Harry Ramsbottom on behalf of the Heart and Stroke Foundation explained, "each day in Saskatchewan 23 people suffer a heart attack or stroke. Our own community has been deeply touched by this disease."

Locally the Month is an important one, said Ramsbottom.

"At the Heart and Stroke Foundation, February is Heart Month, and it is the highlight of our yearly activities, with many special events as well as our annual person to person campaign, with the ultimate goal giving Canadians longer, healthier lives," he said.

By designating the month Ramsbottom said, "Our city will be joining with other cities across the province - and across the country - in support of the fight against a disease that claims too many lives, too early."

Ramsbottom said the campaign needs local support.

"Over the past 60 years, the Heart and Stroke Foundation has gained ground in reducing deaths due to heart disease and stroke. But we still need Yorkton's help because heart disease and stroke continue to take one-in-three before their time," he said, adding, " the successful advancement of medical research, disease prevention and treatment can only be sustained through the support of people here and across the country."
