A 34-year-old Yorkton man who had been scheduled for trial this Monday past for allegedly burning down his own business will now be waiting until 2018 for his day in court.
Chancey Heiser’s trial for arson with disregard for human life, arson for a fraudulent purpose, and fraud, was scheduled to begin at Yorkton Court of Queen’s Bench April 17, but the case was brought forward to April 13 for adjournment. The Court heard the delay was necessary to accommodate the schedules of expert witnesses.
The defence waived delay.
Heiser, who was already serving a four-and-a-half year sentence in Prince Albert for sexual assault, was charged with the arson in December, 2014. The charges dated back to July 2010 when the building at the corner of First Avenue and Smith that housed Heiser’s Health and Fitness, The Pumphouse and Sheer suspiciously went up in flames.
The damage to the building was so extensive it had to be condemned and demolished. The lot remains vacant and is now being used as a parking lot.
The new starting date for the trial is January 9, 2018
