A Heritage Day display at the Parkland Mall February 16 & 17 in 1998, sponsored by the City of Yorkton Municipal Heritage Advisory Sub-Commission creators of the Archival project.
Photo: on the left, Terri Lefebvre Prince, Heritage Researcher and Norman Roebuck, Member of the Municipal Heritage Advisory Sub-Commission. Members in 1998 were Bonnie Holtbaum, Sheila Harris, Lucien Cugnet, Norman Roebuck and Cindy Glauser. The display had three reasons: 1. To show photographs of the history of Yorkton and vicinity from the newly founded City of Yorkton Archives (1997) records. 2. To celebrate for the first time in Yorkton, the Heritage Canada Day.3. To put a local theme to Canada-wide Heritage celebrations. The display was also to invite people to donate photos, documents and small artifacts to the City Archives. Folks stopped by to talk history and folklore, some told us where to look for memorabilia of Yorkton and others went home to get us photos and to donate them. The City Archives have since acquired a good number of photographs and documents of the early days, from the founding of Yorkton in 1882 up to more recent years. Researchers have come from all parts of Canada, some from the United States and one from England, who spent more than a week time in Yorkton to specifically do research in our records. We have regular calls from local residents, the surrounding region and across Canada from folks wanting information or wanting to visit the Archives to do research.
To researchers: It is advisable to contact us ahead of time.
We are always looking for donations of photos and documents relating to Yorkton's history.
