Good Spirit School division will apply for nearly half a million dollars in funding to fix a drainage problem in the courtyard at Yorkton Regional High School.

Last month, Marsh Canada, the division's insurer, informed the board it was cutting off coverage due to multiple flood claims. Sherry Todosichuk, GSSD superintendent of business administration, informed the board the courtyards are not properly sloped causing water to flow toward the building and enter the crawlspace under the school The division has made two large claims in the last three years and Marsh has advised it will not accept a third until the problem has been remediated.

With more flooding predicted for this spring, Todosichuk described the situation as "urgent." The Ministry of Education advised the board to apply under the government's Emergency Block Funding program.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $597,000, which, if approved, will be cost-shared between the ministry and the school division on a 65-35 basis. GSSD's share would be approximately $209,000.

Trustees approved the application March 21.
