History Corner

The carriers would pick up their newspapers at the Leader Post office located upstairs at the back of the building on the southeast corner of Broadway Street and Third Avenue South. Clifford Shaw was agent for the Leader Post from 1944 until his death in 1959, when his wife Ruth took over his position, which consisted of writing Yorkton news to be included in the Leader Post the next day, and supervising groups of carriers like the one portrayed here. We featured one group of carriers last year. Here is another group in 1945:  This photo was donated by Jim Davies of Yorkton. Not all boys can be identified:  1st row left to right: Art Lowenberg, Floyd Davies (his father third from the left), Gordon Ericson, ..Cowan, Lawrence Crosthwaite. 2nd row: Jack Milburn ..Roscoe, ..Russel Harper. Back Row: Brownlee, Nervild Smith, ..Cowan... In the windows in the background are some advertisements: Matheson & Stuart--Barristers. Another Notice was: VOLUNTEER TODAY! As Jim Davies says: “We weren’t finished with the challenges of the war years yet.”
