History Corner

The picture shows Yorkton Mayor C.G. Langrill cutting the ribbon at the opening of the new Bowman Brothers Limited building on Fourth Avenue North in early 1954. On November 2 we published a photo of this building and a short history which mentioned 1932 as the year of the opening event. However, the opening was not in 1932, but in 1954 which was pointed out by one of our readers, Rod Haberstock, a former employee of the company. Thank you for letting us know of the error. The source of the image and the story comes from the company’s trade magazine. These trade booklets which were published by many businesses, usually containing 15-25 pages, gave news of the company’s business, staff social activities in their various stores, new products advertisements, classified advertisements, a joke section, a cartoon, etc. Fifty or more years ago, such booklets were very popular to all family members, being read and re-read, and often saved. That is when Archives are lucky and thankful to have such donations. This booklet is from the fonds of Dr. H. and W. Wilkinson.
