Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the Rural Municipality of Sliding Hills #273, nearby Donwell, Saskatchewan. Built in 1903, on Section 20 Township 29 Range 3 West of the 2nd Meridian.
Donwell was established in 1910 along the Russell Manitoba branch of the Canadian National Railway. It once had 2 elevators, a general store and post office, a lumber yard, blacksmith shop, garage, a school and a bulk oil station.
Theodore Onufrijchuk who wrote the History of the R.M. of Sliding Hills in 1967 says: Because of a lack of quick transportation in the early days, pioneers wanted churches within walking distance of their homes. One finds Ukrainian churches built five or six miles of each other in some parts of the province.
The great majority of Ukrainian people who arrived by train in Yorkton, beginning in 1897 settled on free homesteads in the region. Very few stayed in urban centres. The R.M. of Sliding Hills was heavily populated with Ukrainian immigrants.
