Wolf Hunt

Pictured here is Karl Engel Sr. of the Stornoway district when he was in his late 20s and was out hunting wolves with the help of the three hounds.  In the 1920s when this photo was taken, the winter transportation would have been by horse and sleigh. A fur coat and hat, many blankets and a few warmed up bricks at your feet would have made for the most comfortable travel conditions. Karl settled on a farm in the Rhein area, where he and his wife Katherine, née Miller raised 5 boys and 4 girls. He passed away in 1974 at the age of 82 years. Karl’s parents had immigrated to Canada from Germany when Karl was 5 years old. Photo and story courtesy of L. & A. Weitzel, Yorkton, Sask.
