Picture yourself enjoying a delicious meal with your family this Thanksgiving. Everyone is having a great time reminiscing about all of the wonderful memories each has shared. It is a perfect end to a wonderful summer.
Move ahead to all of the colourful costumes roaming through your neighborhood this Halloween. Zombies, doctors, and ballerinas all collecting candy as they move from house to house. Only over-indulgence could ruin this spooktacular evening.
But what if something did happen? Are you prepared to care for your child or loved one if they are choking and no longer able to breathe?
At St. John Ambulance, we prepare you for the unexpected. Prevention of such incidents is always the most important step.
1. Know the signs of choking so that you are prepared to act the moment it occurs.
2. If children are going out alone, be sure to remind them how to protect against choking. Have children show their spoils to a parent before eating. They also need to know not to run with candy in their mouth.
3. Teach your children what they can do if they know that someone is choking. They need to be taught the signs, and know to call for help immediately.
4. Always have a first aid kit on hand so that you have all the proper tools if an incident becomes serious.
Knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference. For over 125 years, Canadians have trusted St. John Ambulance for quality first aid training and products.
