Communities all over the world are doing fundraisers in support of the Humboldt Broncos following the accident which killed 16, and left 14 injured, and Thursday a benefit hockey game will be held in Yorkton.

Bret Peppler is the one taking the lead in terms of organizing the game and associated activities. He said it was just something he felt compelled to do as a former junior, college and pro hockey player.

The accident “literally made me cry,” he said. With so many hockey, friends, the accident touched very close to home for him..

As for the game and fundraising, Peppler said the support has been gratifying.

“Everybody’s been awesome,” he said.

The game, with face-off at 7:45 p.m., will be a recreational one, but it will feature Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Western Hockey League, and Terrier alumni.

“I’ve had to turn players away who wanted to play,” he said, adding that had he known how many players would jump at the opportunity to participate, “we would have had a tournament.”

Tickets for the game are $10 and available at K.W. Men’s Wear, Boston Pizza, the Terrier office, and the Gallagher Centre.

They will also potentially be available at the door, but Peppler suggested buying early, as he is expecting a sell-out.

“I’m pretty sure from what I’ve heard … it will be a full house,” he said.

Related fundraising events associated with the game will be a steak supper at 5:30 p.m. for $20, while supplies last, at the BMO Lounge at the Gallagher Centre.

Peppler said he is also in the process of collecting a range of items for a silent auction. He said while the donations are being finalized he expects “a lot of incredible items.”
