Parkland College in Yorkton is seeking housing for an influx of international students expected to arrive in the city next month.

"This year is a big year for us," says Lisa Larios, the college's coordinator of business, health, and human services.

Parkland College's international student program was in its infancy during the past two years, with only a handful of students brought in. This year, the college anticipates between 20 and 25 students from countries such as India, Nepal, Bangladesh, China, and Ukraine.

Most of the students are enrolled in eight-month programs beginning in mid-August. The college now needs to find housing for each of them in Yorkton's tight rental market.

Two types of accommodations are being sought: standard rentals and paid homestay hosts.

Homestay families will receive $500 per month to invite an international student into their lives.

"It's going to be great for people to experience another culture as well as open up their homes and present a Canadian culture. We're hoping the families will interact with the student-just show them a little bit about our area and our customs," says Larios.

Homestay arrangements are ideal for many foreign students who are arriving in Canada for the first time, Larios adds. For more experienced students, the college seeks rental accommodations, which will be paid for at market rates.

Larios hopes to have housing in place for the students by early August. A one-hour information session for families and property owners will be held at Parkland College on Thursday, July 21 at 7 pm.
