The monthly SGI traffic blitz focused on intersection safety yielded 383 citations in January:

Police across the province handed out 220 tickets for disobeying traffic lights; 95 for failing to stop or proceeding from a stop sign before safe; 65 for failing to yield the right of way; and 3 for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Of course, while the monthly safety initiatives have a theme, it doesn’t mean police are ignoring other offences.  There were 806 citations for speeding/aggressive driving, 90 impaired driving-related offences, 211 offences for distracted driving (160 of those for cellphone use), and 425 occupant restraint violations (for people not using a seatbelt/car seat/booster seat).

“SGI reminds motorists to be extra cautious approaching intersections, especially during winter months—please keep a safe following distance, watch for cross traffic before entering an intersection, and always keep an eye out for pedestrians at unmarked crosswalks,” stated a press release.

Distracted driving, particularly cell phone use remains the most common cause of traffic collisions and authorities continue to target related offences on an ongoing basis.
