Intersection tender accepted

Yorkton Council has unanimously accepted a tender for Highway 9 and Hamilton Road Intersection Improvements Project.

"City Council approved the capital budget to address traffic movement issues at the intersection Highway 9 and Hamilton Road," explained Moshiur Rahman, engineer with the City at the regular meeting of Council Monday.

Rahman said the project is a large one.

"The project consists of reconfiguration, replacing existing traffic poles and traffic islands, widening Hamilton Road and 7th Avenue to provide left turning bays for east/west traffic and necessary electrical works to improve the control systems," he said.

"The construction will take about 6 weeks to complete. There will be traffic disruption during the construction period and every effort will be made to reduce this inconvenience. The contractor is to provide a traffic accommodation plan to the City before starting construction to minimize impact to surrounding businesses."

The tender was advertised, said Rahman.

"Two bids were received during the tender period. Logan Stevens Construction (2000) Ltd. was the low bidder with a base price of $426,600 for construction and installation excluding material prices," he said.

"The base price includes road structures, asphalt paving, concrete works, and removing and installing poles and traffic lights, underground cabling and related works

"Materials price includes new traffic poles with necessary fixtures, a new controller and traffic signs. These will be purchased separately by the City."

The original approved capital budget to this project was $487,000.00 including materials. The project budget is $426,600, materials; $51,000, and a contingency of $10,000 for a total project cost of $487,600.
