January named Active Living Month

Losing weight is typically the most common New Year’s resolution. Getting fit also almost always makes the Top 5. As the New Year begins, the City of Yorkton is trying to help out in those regards. January has been designated Active Living Month.

Losing weight is typically the most common New Year’s resolution. Getting fit also almost always makes the Top 5.

As the New Year begins, the City of Yorkton is trying to help out in those regards. January has been designated Active Living Month. Special programs for the month include free walking/jogging on the tracks at Gloria Hayden Community Centre and the Flexi-hall at Gallagher Centre and After School Swim at the Water Park for only $2.50.

If walking is your cup of tea, but you also want to get outside, there are great trails at J. C. Beach and the Ecological Preserve.

There is also free public skating on Sundays at Farrell Agencies Arena (Gallagher Centre) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Kinsmen Arena from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m.

In addition, Lisa Washington, the City’s community development manager points out there are many other free and near-free activities available at City facilities.

Gloria Hayden, for example, offers Drop In Volleyball (Monday), Badminton and Ladies Floor Hockey (Wednesday), Basketball (Wednesday and Friday) and Pickleball (Thursday). All these drop in programs are only $3.

The Water Park Drop In Water Polo Mondays also for $3.

Gloria Hayden is also offering two for one admission every day in January for Squash and Racketball.

Finally, there are plenty of free options in area parks. Knights of Columbus Park, Rodney Ridge, Weinmaster Park and Deer Park Golf Course. On the north side of Rodney Ridge, there is also snowboarding and Deer Park has cross country skiing trails.

Free outdoor skating and pickup hockey is available at Knights of Columbus Park, Silver Heights Park, Weinmaster Park and Heritage Heights Park.

The City wishes Yorktonites a healthy 2016, Washington said.
