What better way to get into the holiday spirit than with sparkling music? The Yorkton Arts Council is thrilled to present their next "Star" in the Stars For Saskatchewan concert series: Jimmy Rankin, Wednesday, December 4 at 8:00 p.m. in the Anne Portnuff Theatre, Yorkton Regional High School.
Jimmy is a well-known solo artist, as well as being front man of the Canadian Celtic heroes, the Rankin Family. As a singer-songwriter, Jimmy has amassed many awards and nominations including 5 JUNO awards and 27 East Coast Music awards, just to name a few. The Rankins, together and separately, are bright stars in the firmament of the very best of Canadian music, but music is a continual learning and evolving process. "As an artist, I find my creative ground is constantly shifting as I soak in influences and experience the world around me. Inspiration comes in many forms - current events, traveling, watching my kids grow I was never one to be pigeon-holed and I think my music is indicative of my varied interests and influences. "Jimmy explains.
A busy career keeps Jimmy Rankin on the go. When asked if he could sit down at the kitchen table right now with his guitar and play what relaxes or inspires him, Jimmy commented, "There aren't too many quiet moments around my house these days but when they happen, I find myself drawn to melancholy Celtic ballads. So well-written and timeless."
Jimmy explained that making music is a series of steps: a journey. "I love performing but I think it's the journey that I relish most. The life of a song is a multi-faceted adventure. It begins with the creation of the song with an idea or spark of inspiration. Next comes the recording process where the song blossoms and comes to life. Recording can be magical when the song comes together with the benefit of talented session players. After that comes the tour - nothing beats the natural high of instant gratification when playing songs live and really connecting with an audience."
On this tour, Jimmy will be sharing seasonal selections from his own Christmas recording, "Tinsel Town", along with favourites from his extensive solo and Rankin Family catalogue. "The challenge was to take these great songs and to interpret them in a new and interesting way." says Jimmy.
