Saskatchewan police agencies and the provincial insurer, SGI, are not letting up on a campaign designed to raise safety awareness and save lives.
In the July traffic safety blitz, dubbed Operation Heads Up, Buckle Up, police targeted failing to yield, jaywalking and seatbelt use issuing a total of 304 citations including 84 seatbelt violations and 107 speeding tickets.
"Seatbelts do save lives and in the summer months, when we typically see an increase in the volume of traffic on our highways, it's more important than ever to buckle-up," said Chief Troy Hagen, President of the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police. "Summer also means more pedestrians, at all hours, so both motorists and pedestrians need to pay attention when sharing the road."
The July 24 and 25 blitz was the fourth time in 2013 that buckling up was a component of the monthly operation. For years Saskatchewan has led the country in per capita traffic fatalities.
The July road safety campaign was held in conjunction with a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) event in La Ronge promoting child passenger safety. Car seat technicians checked 47 child car and booster seats and SGI gave away four car seats and 17 booster seats as a result.
