Keep cooled off at the Stirling room

Laketown Leaders Seniors Club hosts Community Coffee Time Monday mornings from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. (even long weekends.) The regular Monthly Noon Pot Luck Luncheon for August is the 19th at the Stirling Room.

Jim and Phyllis McCallum recently returned from a 20 day visit to the Yukon and Alaska. They travelled by Motor Coach from White Horse over the entire length of the Alaska Highway visiting numerous places of interest including Dawson City, Denali Park and a great view of Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain of North America.

On June 21, the longest day and as tradition has it in many northern town and cities, they drink a toast at midnight from the tallest point in the area. There was total daylight for the entire 24 hours"the land of the Midnight Sun." At Watson Lake, the Sign Forest Town, where there are 800 thousand signs from around the world, the McCallum's put up a 2013 Saltcoats, SK sign. At Fairbanks they went on a river boat tour, seeing dog team training and salmon fishing, smoking and drying for the winter. As it is the Alaskan Salmon run, the rivers were full of salmon moving upstream.

Travelling to Juneau, the capitol, they toured the city. There are no roads to Juneau - only air or sea. They boarded the ship "Millennium" for a 4 day trip to Vancouver and flew home from there. There were 4 stops along the coast cruise, seeing the Hubbard Glacier where huge chunks of ice were breaking off while the ship moved slowly past them. There was a stop at a native village with Salmon and Alaskan King Crab Cannery, Touring the area the McCallum's saw in a tall tree a pair of bald eagles with 2 young ones - an unusual occurrence as most eagles nest in high mountains. There were 4 Totem Pole Carvers who make and sell the poles all over the world.

At Skagway, a large cruise ship harbour and refuelling point, they boarded the White Pass and Yukon Railway which runs to Dawson City for a 2 hour trip. Between historic visits, show, Vaudeville revues and wonderful meals, it was a memorable trip and recommended to anyone.

The Town of Saltcoats is once again opening the Stirling Room for residents to come and cool off on hot days. This service is available during regular business hours. Call the office if you've questions.

St. Augustine's worship is at 9:00 a.m. with reminder that the one service on Aug. 11 is at 3:00 p.m. at Llewelyn followed by pot luck picnic.
