Land gets final rezoning

The City of Yorkton has rezoned lands surrounding the Tourism/Chamber of Commerce building east of Highway 9 South and north of Highway 16 East for commercial development.

The City of Yorkton has rezoned lands surrounding the Tourism/Chamber of Commerce building east of Highway 9 South and north of Highway 16 East for commercial development.

The Municipal Development Plan Bylaw had prescribed the use of the lands to be Parks and Recreation (PR) and the lands are zoned as PR-1 Parks and Recreation (environmentally Sensitive) in the Zoning bylaw.

The lands have now been re-designated and rezoned for commercial developments, following second and third reading of the bylaw amendments at the regular meeting of Council Monday.

Michael Eger, Planner with the City, explained the lands are located in close proximity to a shallow aquifer known as the Logan East System, adding it was essential the aquifer be protected. As a result an Environmentally Sensitive overlay zone was placed on the parcel which will limit the types of uses (such as gas stations) which can be developed on the lands and will further mitigate the possibility of development compromising the water quality of the underground water supply.
