The City of Yorkton is moving to rezone lands for commercial development.

The City is undertaking a new commercial development in lands surrounding the Tourism/Chamber of Commerce building, east of Highway 9 South and north of Highway 16 East.

The Municipal Development Plan Bylaw currently prescribes the use of the lands to be Parks and Recreation (PR) and the lands are zoned as PR-1 Parks and Recreation (environmentally Sensitive) in the Zoning bylaw. The lands must firstly be re-designated and rezoned before such time that individual commercial developments can take place.

Michael Eger with the City explained, "the lands are located in close proximity to a shallow aquifer, we know as the Logan East System. "It is essential that this aquifer be protected." He added, an Environmentally Sensitive overlay zone should be placed on the parcel. This will limit the types of uses (such as Gas Stations) that can be developed on the lands and will further mitigate the possibility of development compromising the water quality of the underground water supply.

Council gave unanimous first reading to amendments to both the Municipal Development Plan Bylaw, and the Zoning Bylaw to facilitate the change.
