The local Liberal Party Riding Association officially nominated Brooke Malinoski of Melville last week as its candidate for the upcoming federal election.

In a low-key meeting September 16, during which the candidate appeared by telephone from the University of Saskatchewan, about a dozen party members acclaimed the 21-year-old fourth-year student.

Malinoski was born in Yorkton and moved to Melville as a child where she attended Melville Comprehensive School. In 2012, she was accepted to the University of Saskatchewan as a Greystone Scholar, an honour bestowed on students who achieve an average of 95 per cent or better in Grade 12. She is working on a double degree in political science and indigenous studies.

She is also committed to community, she said, citing her involvement with Women in the Legislature—an organization devoted to closing the gender gap provincial and federal legislatures— Big Brothers-Big Sisters, the Open Door Society, and other charitable groups.

That community work, combined with academic excellence, took her to Oxford University for her third year of university. While studying at Oxford, Malinoski was active in her college rowing team, as well as a member of Oxford Women in Business where she continued her work in promoting equality and entrepreneurship.

Politics has always been of great interest to Malinoski and she is no stranger to Parliament where she worked for a summer.

She is fluently bilingual and is excited about taking on the challenge of running for MP.

“I think my understanding of local issues and my proud commitment to the riding will make me a strong voice for Yorkton-Melville in Ottawa,” she said.
